Retail distribution mezzanine construction projects, Yorkshire

The project

The design and construction of piles to enable the construction of mezzanines, some on multiple levels, was required across several sites for an online retailer based in Yorkshire. The mezzanines were needed to provide additional space to improve the efficiency of storage and the distribution of stock.

The solutions

The project had several challenges along the way that needed to be met to enable a successful installation. It was imperative that the distribution centres remained fully operational while the work was being carried out and that the work was completed within a strict deadline. Restricted access to the sites was in place, working with low headroom, although some sites had very high mezzanine column loading – these required multiple piles.

Owing to the nature of the business, the stringiest of environmental tolerances for noise, vibration, dust and air quality had to be adhered to. Each location had additional challenges because of the variable soil conditions that we needed to work with. In response to this, hundreds of piles were installed across the sites using drive piles, rotary bored piles or a combination of both techniques. Most of these piles were our monopile solution, which proved to be very cost effective for this project.

Most of the sites needed a fume-free environment, which was met with our range of electric rigs, and all projects involved multiple rigs to meet the tight completion deadlines required by our client.

In addition to the specialist piling works, we conducted all the substructure civil works including coring, sawing, removing concrete, excavation and installing single, double or triple pile caps across the projects.
